The District of Kitimat is considering a belay wall system for the community. Use the tabs on this page to see the status of this project and learn more about what belaying is.

Where this project is now

Getting us to now, in June, 2024, Kitimat Council directed the municipal staff to begin a community engagement project to find out more about the community's perspective on a possible belay rock wall.

Here's Council's direction:

THAT the District undertake a community engagement process to gauge community interest and solicit feedback, on the construction of a Climbing Wall with Belay System. (June 17, 2024 Regular Meeting of Council)

This followed Council's earlier direction, from June 2023, for staff to investigate strategies to potentially advance this project, which followed input and encouragement from residents who are interested in seeing one installed.

The results of that community survey was presented to Council in February 2024.

With the results in hand, Council referred an engineering feasibility study to be conisdered in next year’s (2026) municipal budget discussions, once staff have developed a draft training and certification program that could be implemented with a future belay wall.

What is belaying?

A belaying wall is, put simply, a climbing structure that uses ropes and harnesses as safety measures to protect climbers.

The Riverlodge Recreation Centre has a rock wall structure, however it does not use any rope mechanisms for climbers meaning it is not a belaying wall.
