Backyard Hen Keeping Pilot Project wraps up and next steps forward

4 December 2025

Bawk!

There is exciting news for the backyard hen keeping pilot project.

Namely, the pilot project has successfully come to an end!

As you may recall, this pilot project was meant to learn the viability for people to have backyard hens in residential areas of the community. (This is in addition to Cable Car and Strawberry Meadows where they are already allowed through zoning.)

On November 3, Council received the final report on this pilot project with the findings from the program and through the public engagement.

Next steps, updating the bylaws permanently!

Council has directed staff to prepare a bylaw amending the Kitimat Municipal Code to permit backyard hen keeping based on the provisions of the Backyard Hen Keeping in Residential Zones Policy B-10 and feedback received through the community engagement process.

This bylaw will be coming in the future but reaching this step is thanks to all the participants of this pilot project and everyone who helped provide input.

You can learn more about this project either on the Get Involved Kitimat page here, or in the November 3, 2025 Council report here.
