What to know about taxes in Kitimat

4 December 2023

Just as the budget process is how the municipality decides to allocate money, you may be wondering where the money comes from that we handle.

Some of you are probably quick to answer "Me. It's me you get the money from."

And yes, part of the District's revenue is from you as a residential homeowner.

Property taxes overall account for just over 80 per cent of the District's total revenue, for 2023. Another nearly six per cent is from user fees and charges (so, for example, dropping into Riverlodge), and eight per cent comes from government grants. There's a few more sources too but those are the main ones.

That 80 per cent coming from property taxes isn’t just from homeowners though. We collect taxes from six classes of properties.

Here is how the taxes for 2023 were split:

All together - property taxes, grants, user fees, etc. - the District is managing a revenue of $45,128,514 for 2023.
