An update on the adoption of the budget

7 May 2025

With the financial bylaws adopted for the annual budget, here is how the current tax rates can affect the tax bill of a typical home in Kitimat.

To begin though, Kitimat's property taxes are a mix of a mill rate (also called a variable), which means a certain amount that is charged per $1,000 of assessed value of your home, and a flat tax.

As Council determines each year what overall tax increase is necessary for municipal operations, a tax rate is set to collect that amount. Your property's assessed value determines what you pay based on that tax rate.

Overall, Council has set a 5.5 per cent overall budget increase.

For this year’s flat tax, it is set to $763, reflecting that 5.5 per cent noted above.

Using B.C. Assessment’s ‘typical assessed value’ for a home in Kitimat for 2024 and 2025, here is how this year’s tax rate would affect a property tax bill on this example property.

Year

Typical assessed value

Mill rate

Flat Tax

Total

2024

$344,000

$1.82403 / per $1,000

$723

$1,350.46

2025

$345,000

$2.01745 / per $1,000

$763

$1,459.02

The change on this typical assessed home in Kitimat works out to a $108.56 increase. The change on your specific tax notice will depend on changes to your own home’s assessed value.

Also to note, on your property tax bill are two standalone costs, one for curbside waste collection and another for water. This year, you will notice a $20.50 increase on the water rate, the first in a phased increase. For next year’s tax notice you will see the full new amount reflected, totaling $205. That price is a $41 difference to 2024’s rate.

Don’t forget, we also collected taxes on behalf of other authorities as well. The total due paid on your property tax notice total includes those other authorities as well, and they will be listed on your notice. It is not all from the District of Kitimat.
