Dock installation in December

14 November 2024

The District of Kitimat is excited to mark the next step in enhancements to Minette Bay West Park, through the installation of a floating dock on the water.

The installation of a floating dock will commence in December, and means the park will be closed from December 4 until December 31, 2024 to allow for its smooth installation and associated construction.

It is possible the work may conclude more quickly and the park will re-open earlier if that is the case.

Already Minette Bay West Park is an enjoyable place in the community to have a picnic, a fire in one of the many firepits, and simply sit to enjoy the view in a covered seating area facing the Channel.

The addition of this dock is thanks to a donation from Kitimat LNG, the joint venture of Chevron Canada and Woodside Energy. They have provided an aluminum floating dock and gangway.

This new park feature adds better marine access for small watercraft like canoes and kayaks.

The associated construction to support the installation of this dock is supported in part by funding from the Destination Development Fund in the amount of $700,000.

A concept plan for Minette Bay West Park was originally presented to the community in 2017. The park was largely complete and available to the public in 2022 with an official opening event in June 2024.

The park’s lands were given to the District of Kitimat in 2015 from Rio Tinto, as Kitimat then marked its 60 years of incorporation.
