Nechako Centre in Kitimat

Nechako Centre Concept Plan

Nechako Centre is located within the Nechako neighbourhood and is accessible from Kingfisher Avenue. It used to be a popular and well used commercial area but has seen a noticeable decline in the commercial uses offered since the late 70s and early 80s. In 2021, the District of Kitimat hired a consultant to complete a market assessment and concept plan for Nechako Centre. The assessment and plan were completed in the end of 2022 and was presented to Council on December 5, 2022.

Staff are currently working on the implementation of the plan and are intending to provide an update to Council on the status of implementation and further direction soon.

The building

The District of Kitimat acquired the Nechako Centre property in 2023 through an expropriation process. It is expected that the building will be demolished in the Fall of 2024.

Specifically, this is referring to the structure of Nechako Centre which has been vacant and derelict for many years. (See the image above.) This does not impact the buildings with businesses currently operating in the area.

What has happened to date:

  • The building, 110-143 Nechako Centre, was acquired by the District of Kitimat in 2023.
  • An old oil tank was removed from the site in January 2024.
  • The 2024 municipal budget includes the demolition of that portion of Nechako Centre.
