Next steps for water treatment upgrade

4 November 2024

The upgrade to Kitimat's Water Treatment System can move to the next step, after receiving provincial approval required for its funding.

At its completion, Kitimat's water treatment will meet modern quality standards which will end the need for future water quality advisories resulting from turbidity in the Kitimat River.

The future treatment system will use a mix of chemical conditioning, additional filtering, and UV disinfection to treat the drinking water.

The provincial approval received means the District can now borrow the additional funds required to complete this project.

Funding for this project is provided through the Canada-British Columbia Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, the District of Kitimat, funding from the Northwest BC Resource Benefits Alliance, and a loan through the Municipal Finance Authority.
