Additional abatement to take place at Nechako Centre

29 May 2025

The demolition of the District-owned Nechako Centre buildings is continuing, but residents may notice it will be quieter for a short time.

At all stages of the demolition the worksite and the structures are assessed for any additional needs. The second building to be demolished has been found to have additional asbestos-containing materials ahead of demolition activities, so demolition will be delayed to prepare for proper additional abatement to remove it.

We would like to emphasize as well that this additional material was not present in the first building, and that abatement work had initially taken place in December 2024 following a third-party hazardous material assessment. There is no concern for public health relating to any phase of this project.

While a delay to the demolition is unfortunate, this is an example of the project continuing with the safety of residents and workers in mind. This is a project that will take time but will be done right.

We anticipate the abatement of this new material will take a number of weeks, and will inform you when demolition continues
