We’ve got the buildings down! So now, what’s up with the space?

The demolition of the old buildings is one component of the Nechako Centre Concept Plan, which you helped us create. Community engagement in 2021 and in 2022 informed the guiding document which fleshed out the vision for Nechako Centre’s future. Key priorities include:

Supporting mixed commercial and residential development

Retaining and enhancing recreational uses and facilities

Improving public spaces.

With the buildings gone, and with the Concept Plan as the guiding light, we are working with a consultant to create the Development Plan. The Development Plan itself will cover the important - and to some, the less exciting - parts of revitalizing the space. That includes a market analysis, engineering and servicing capacity strategy, public realm improvement plan, and others. Once the Development Plan is drafted it will be viewable publicly and presented to Council for their review and consideration on the next steps.

All that said, there are plans in the works to create some temporary improvements sometime in the new year. These ideas are intended to use the existing foundations to improve the area's appearance and put the space to use while the longer-term plan is underway.
