A summary of capital projects for 2025

22 May 2025

Following on our recent information that the annual budget has been adopted (see here), we are happy to share some highlights on what we’re aiming to accomplish for 2025.

Below is a list of just a few of the capital projects included in the budget. Capital projects are, simply, specific projects or purchases that the District will take on in the year that are beyond the day-to-day operations of the municipality. For example, a capital project might include building a new park, while snow clearing is part of the operational budget.

Road maintenance projects, depending on the nature of the work, can be capital or operational. In 2025, there is $1.1 million in the operational budget towards road paving in Kitimat, specifically focused on sections of Haisla Boulevard. This is in addition to regular road patching work by Public Works throughout the year.

One other thing to note, the budgeted expenditure for these projects may be funded through a mix of property taxes, special grants and funding from other sources, and transfers from municipal reserves or borrowing.

In total, capital expenditures represent just under $25 million of the budget.

Here are some of the capital projects adopted for this year:

  • Completing a detailed design for a new Public Safety Building. ($756,960)
    • The existing home of the Kitimat Fire and Ambulance service is among Kitimat’s oldest buildings and in need of a replacement. The 2025 budget continues planning of the new building.
  • Building improvements at the Kitimat RCMP detachment. ($65,000)
    • While the RCMP is a national policing service, the District of Kitimat – as all municipalities with RCMP do – contribute financially to local policing. Also, in Kitimat the RCMP detachment building is owned by the District of Kitimat.
  • General maintenance to Riverlodge Recreation Centre, including flooring and replacement of water piping. ($181,185)
  • General maintenance to the Tamitik Arena and the Sam Lindsay Aquatic Centre. ($1,208,471 combined.)
    • These improvements are largely mechanical, including an arena condenser replacement, a replacement of an air handling unit at the pool, and additional LED lighting.
  • Water treatment upgrade project. ($15,000,000 for 2025, of a total project cost of $25 million)
  • Outdoor projects including:
    • Hirsch Creek Park trail improvements. ($28,000)
    • Design and engineering for the spray park project. ($150,000)
    • Pickleball court construction. ($600,000)
  • Improvements or additions to some portions of the sewer network. ($283,653)
